Following the usual pattern for this season Hebburn Town were again forced to make several changes from the previous Saturday due to injury and unavailability of key players, and once again were without six regular and more experienced players for this Durham Challenge cup-tie. Some good news however with Karl McMann returning after suspension but he too had to play out of position at full back.
Hebburn started well and were on top in the first 15 minutes and McMann looked sharp in attack and defence, combining well with Dadd down the right wing. There were few goal mouth incidents but Hebburn's defence and midfield looked solid. A Graham free kick over the bar was the only shot on goal in the first quarter of an hour.
The teams 'scrapped' for the next 15 minutes although Hebburn were slightly on top and an excellent curling effort from McMann had the home keeper struggling as the ball narrowly missed the target. Hebburn were rewarded with a goal on the half hour when after great close down work by Trosh, Armstrong and Urwin Gary Dadd struck a brilliant volley from the edge of the box to give the home keeper no chance. Hebburn applied further pressure until half time with the two front men putting in lots of effort. A deserved 1-0 lead in what had been a generally untidy first half.
The game re-started in scrappy fashion with some hard tackling by both sides one of which caused a foot injury to Paul Trosh: he hobbled for some time but was forced to go off in th 58th minute to be replaced by Shawn Carroll. This appeared to unsettle the balance of the Hebburn side with Urwin now playing wide left but they missed three excellent chances to increase their lead; first Finbar Lynch shot wide the post and then twice within 5 minutes the goalkeeper spread himself to deny Armstrong in one-on-one situations when the centre forward was the clear favourite to score.
The game was becoming harder and more physical and during this period Washington lost their heads somewhat and two of their players were dismissed - a straight red and a second yellow card. However this seemed to inspire the home team and they pressed hard in the last ten minutes. Hebburn should have stretched the depleted Washington side but found difficulty in holding on to the ball. Nevertheless they secured the 1-0 victory to take them into the next round
