Hebburn welcomed North Yorkshire visitors Marske, who were now focusing on their promotion ambitions after a very successsful run in the F.A. Vase. They are handily placed to earn promotion with games in hand over their rivals. They are one of the best supported teams in the league and they brought a very vocal support for a potentially thrilling encounter. Paul Trosh replaced Micky Irvine in midfield and Karl McMann replaced the injured Anthony Myers on the wide right.
The visitors started in excellent fashion and their fine football was stretching the Hebburn team, in all areas of the pitch. The home team found it difficult to retain any possession and it was no surprise when Marske took the lead after fifteen minutes. Sloppy defensive work allowed Marske to take a quick, short corner and the resulting cross was fired home by central defender Dan Wilson, giving keeper Gary Frater no chance.
Further pressure from Marske ended with another corner and this time they took the more direct option and Wilson rose above the defence and the kleeper to plant a header firmly into the top corner. Things looked extremely gloomy for the home side as Marske continued to apply the screws and a heavy defeat looked the most likely outcome. However, Hebburn are gaining a reputation for not lying down and after 32 minutes Michael Armstrong responded with a brilliant effort from 30 yards which smacked into the back of the net with the Marske keeper Brendan Ledgeway totally beaten. This seemed to take the steam out of the Marske play and up to half time Hebburn more than held their own.
Immediately after the break Gary Frater came to Hebburn's rescue with two great point blank saves, again giving hope to Hebburn that they could get something out of the game. Their cause was helped when Marske's excellent mid fielder Steven Cochrane was sent off for a second yellow card. Hebburn raised their game, and in particular Colin Nesbit and Kyle Pendergood who stamped out the real threat posed by centre forward Benn Thompson who had been a handful in the first half. Hebburn were rewarded after 74 minutes when Michael Armstrong battled through two tremendous tackles to drive the ball across the keeper to level the score.
Hebburn were now looking the likely winners and after 80 minutes a pin-point cross from Armstrong was met by Karl McMann who rose above the away defence to head powerfully into the roof of the net and three minutes later McMann took advantage of confusion in the Marske defence and drove the ball home from eight yards to complete an amazing comeback by the home side.
This 4-2 vicotry completed the double over the strong Marske squad to lift the team into eighth position and the team should be given credit for hanging on when they were under the cosh and turning the game around.
