Hebburn faced local rivals Jarrow Roofing in a vital mid-table derby on an excellent playing surface in crisp wintery conditions. Daniel Gray was still missing due to suspension and although Robert Marsden was sidelined with an achilles injury Nicky Pain returned to the established mid-field.
The first half started with pressure from the home side and Adam Dowell, the Jarrow goalkeeper, made an outstanding save in the 4th minute to turn a Finbarr Lynch drive over the ball and in the 12th minute saved superbly with his feet from a Shaun Carroll volley. Roofing looked dangerous on the break and Gary Frater made a telling save to deny a Lawton effort in the 18th minute. The game remained fairly even for the remainder of the half with little goalmouth incident and Hebburn's back four - McMann,Pendergood, Nesbitt and Myers coped well with any Jarrow attacks.
The second half was a different story, with Hebburn controlling most of the play. The defence took a much higher line which allowed Hebburn to exert pressure from both flanks and Anthony Myers and Finbarr Lynch were making it very difficult for the away defence. Trosh and Pain linked well and Armstrong and Carroll were causing problems up front.
Dowell made two great saves in the opening ten minutes to deny Myers who was giving the Roofing defence a torrid time. The pressure finally paid off when in the 58th minute Lynch cut in from the left to set up Nicky Pain who made no mistake from close range. A lot of chances fell to the Hebburn team but a combination of lax finishing and good goalkeeping from Dowell kept the visitors in the game. However Hebburn clinched the three points with an excellent move and an equally fine goal with 10 minutes remaining. Following a Roofing attack Gary Frater quickly rolled the ball to Davy Myers who took the ball into the opposing half before releasing a fine pass to Lynch; he found Carroll with a great cross which the young striker powered home with a superb header from 10 yards into the top left hand corner.(From end to end without the opposition touching the ball)
A fully deserved victory following a fine and much improved second half performance with good contribution throughout the team.
