Guisborough Town 1
Hebburn Town FC 3

Daniel Gray (1)
Michael Armstrong (1)
Karl McMann (1)

Hebburn travelled to picturesque North Yorkshire and the pretty market town of Guisborough to take on the town team who are several places below them in the league. Dadd and Trosh were missing from the Hebburn squad because of suspension but striker Karl McMann made a welcome return from a lengthy injury spell to accompany Michael Armstrong up front. The Guisborough team included David Onions who had often scored against Hebburn during his time at Marske Town.

Once again conditions were not ideal, with a very strong wind favouring the home team in the first half. Play was fairly even throughout the first period although the conditions meant that Hebburn were defending a lot of long through balls; the three centre halves Pendergood,Nesbitt and Myles were coping well and there was little threat to Gary Frater in the Hebburn goal. Hebburn were playing good controlled football from back to front attempting to keep the ball on the ground; the midfield were supporting Armstrong and McMann who were good target men in the wind although goal attempts were limited to a number of free kicks around the box. With Hebburn content to keep the score at nil-nil until half time a loss of concentration by the defence led to Guisborough taking the lead just before the interval; first a wild cross that looked to be going out of play was retrieved by a Guisborough player and the surprised Hebburn defenders stood flat footed as the resulting high ball was headed home by Gary Wood.

The Hebburn team responded in the best possible fashion when McMann went close with two efforts in the 46th and 47th minutes and the same player picked out Armstrong after only three minutes who slid the ball home to level the scores. Guisborough briefly raised their game and struck the bar twice within a couple of minutes but Hebburn counteracted and started to influence the game with some good football throughout the side. Daniel Gray in particular was involved in some fine defending and attacking play; he had been very strong in the air and in the 60th minute rose to a fine cross from Robert Marsden to power a header past the keeper to give Hebburn a deserved lead.

At this stage Guisborough started to lose composure and conceded many free kicks resulting in five bookings and a straight red card, although the latter looked harsh. Hebburn retained there composure under this pressure and continued to press and the home keeper John Mohan made several outstanding saves including strikes by McMann and Nesbitt in the 65th and 80th minutes. This pressure was rewarded on the stroke of full time when, after his first effort was blocked Karl McMann re-acted very quickly to curl a fine effort around the keeper from the edge of the box to secure a well earned 3-1 victory.
