Stokesley Versus HebburnTown
Saturday 9th September 2017 Kick Off 3.00pm
Hebburn Town travelled down the A19 to North Yorkshire to face opponents Stokesley Sports Club, from the Wearside League, in the First Round Qualifying Tie of the FA Vase. Three goals in the first half, and five in the second, with hat-tricks for Gary Shaw and second half substitute Channnon North, plus goals by Glen Hargrave and Stuart Bramley gave the Hornets a convincing 8-0 Victory. The score could have been much greater, if chances had been taken.
Stokesley were well beaten, but their players gave one hundred percent throughout the side, and were very unlucky with two efforts, a free kick and a header from a corner which struck the woodwork. However, Hebburn’s defence, with Bramley and Donaghy well in control, gave Stokesley little scope when they did attack.
The game started slowly and Hebburn’s first shot on goal did not come until the tenth minute, with a Kris Hughes volley saved by the home keeper. As the Hornets raised the pressure a long throw by Stuart Bramley after 15 minutes was clinically swept home by Gary Shaw to open the scoring. Although Glen Hargrave should have doubled the score shortly after when his shot cleared the bar, by the half hour mark, Hebburn were leading 3-0.
Firstly a great ball from Meech Kanda freed up Callum Smith to cross the ball to Gary Shaw, who in turn passed on to Glen Hargrave, to side foot the ball past the keeper and five minutes later Stuart Bramley planted a firm header past the Stokesley keeper, from a Shaw corner.
A Stokesley free kick from 25 yards after 40 minutes beat Hornet’s keeper Steve Hubery, but hit the angle of post and bar, to be scrambled clear and as the half drew to a close Hebburn could have added to their total, with a couple of missed opportunities,
The second period started with Hebburn well on top and gaining a string of corners from either wing. One of these from Gary Shaw avoided forwards and defenders and ended up in the net for a 4-0 lead.
Manager Scott Oliver, brought on substitutes, North, Tannoh and Bickerstaff as Hebburn exerted further pressure; a great through ball from Chris Douglas found Smith who delivered a pin-point cross to Shaw who made no mistake, for his hat-trick and to extend the lead to 5-0.
Channon North joined the score sheet with two goals in three minutes; the first in a goal mouth scramble and the second when he harassed the keeper into a mistake and with a cool finish made the score 7-0.
As the game drew to a close Gary Shaw hit the post and North headed the rebound narrowly wide, but North had the final word when a great run and cross by Scott Wallace allowed him to tap the ball home for his hat-trick.
Hebburn Town face Ryton and Crawcrook at home in the Durham Challenge Cup on Wednesday, 13th September and Newcastle Benfield in the next round of the FA Vase at Hebburn Sports Ground, on Saturday 23rd September.
